Chaga is the medicinal "mushroom" of the North. It primarily grows on birch trees in cold-weather climates in the Northern Hemisphere. Although technically not a mushroom (chaga is sclerotium or conk) it gets lumped in with polypore mushrooms such as Reishi and Birch Bracket because of its similar medicinal properties. Chaga has demonstrated anti-cancer, immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and anti-aging properties in scientific research. Although if you've ever had kidney stones or are at risk of developing them, it should be noted that Chaga is high in oxalates (also found in high quantities in spinach, almonds and beets). Birch bark shares some of the same medicinal compounds as chaga, namely betulinic acid, so it makes a perfect complement in the ethanol extraction. We use a ratio of 2:1, chaga to birch bark in our tinctures.
